Default Tenji Showroom Reef Aquarium

Greetings Zeovit community. I've been following this forum for several months now, trying to learn as much as can about the Zeovit method in preparation for building a new reef system in my company's new office space. We design and build large scale aquarium systems throughout North America and are in the process of setting up a new office and showroom in Monterey, CA. If you are interested in what we do... www.tenji.com.

However, I'm not here to promote our company. Instead I hope to tap into the incredible wealth of knowledge this forum provides in order to build a first rate reef aquarium in our office space.

I'm in the process of piping the filtration system this week. The plumbing in the filtration space is complete and I will make connections to the tank vessel (in the adjacent room) in the next day or so. I've attached some images from the "wet room" this evening. I plan on adding water next week and starting the 14 day cycle.

The display tank is rimless starphire aquarium with dimensions 54 x 30 x 20 tall. It has a false back with coast to coast overflow to hide a wave box, stand pipes and return plumbing. Tank volume including the false back is 113 gallons. The sump was manufactured by My Reef Creations and measures 36 x 18 x 18. Also on the system is a shallow frag tank (48 x 24 x 10). Here are more specifics:

Tell us about your tank.
Please give us answers to the following questions in order to get more accurate dosing recommendations.

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter - 177 gallons
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter 140 gallons
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique B-Ionic 2 part
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) No
5. Are you using Ozone No
6. Are you using UV No
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) Reef Octopus POV DC2 - Rated for 200 gallons
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels N/A
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels N/A
10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) None - Protein skimming and Zeovit reactor only
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) ATI 48" Powermodule - 3 x 75W LED and 4 x 54W T5
12. What corals do you keep - Will keep primarily SPS
13. Tissue color (light or dark) - N/A
14. How long has the tank been running - Still under construction
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system - I want to expand my reef husbandry skill-set and produce a stunning aquarium for my business
16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.) I only plan on dosing Zeovit products
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) - Roughly 60 lbs of Fiji premium that we've had in a dedicated holding system for 8+ weeks. Also at least one plate type rock that was BRS dry rock. It was acid bathed and treated with Lanthanum chloride. It has been in the system with the Fiji rock for 8+ weeks.
18. Any present problems N/A
19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) - Hannah - phoshpate and alk handheld meters, Red Sea Alk, Ca, Mg, Nitrate, Iodine and Potassium.
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.) N/A
22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.) N/A
23. Which salt brand do you use - Seachem Reef Salt

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any and all feedback. I will continue to post photos as the progress continues.

Hi Mark

If you plan to use the zeovit system I would recommend you to cycle the tank as follows:

Thank you G. Alexander. I do plan on using the full Zeovit System and have read the guide. I've also been following this group for a few months. I feel like I have a basic understanding, but I'm sure there will be questions as things move forward.

I plan on starting my 14 day cycle next week. I currently have Zeostart3, Zeobak, Sponge Power, zeolite stones and KZ carbon. I understand this will get me through the first several weeks until a stable ulns is achieved. However, I'd like to know if there are other additives I should have on hand (i.e. K-balance, flatworm stop, zeozyme, coral snow, etc.) during this phase. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Mark, here is a good step by step guide for the cycle:

http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showpos...60&postcount=7

Usually the mentioned products are enough for the first couple of weeks if all goes well. A accurate K+ test might make sense also.

Default System Update

An update on the progress of our Tenji showroom aquarium:

It has been 16 days since start-up and everything has gone according to plan. I saw a minimal amount of algae growth starting around day 6 that never developed to a significant amount. I added grazers on day 11 and they have removed 90% of the the growth. What they haven't eaten is dying off (small green tufts turning to light brown/white). I saw a very small bump in PO4 at around day 6 up to 0.05 ppm. By day 8 it was 0.00 and has remained that way since. Nitrates started at 2ppm and reduced to 0 by day 11. They have measured 0 every day since.

I attribute the low initial nutrient levels to starting off with well cured live rock that was treated with Lanthanum Chloride until holding tank PO4 levels read consistently 0. I did add one large piece of dry BRS rock that I acid bathed and treated with LC as well. It cured with the live rock for several weeks before setting up the display.

I used Seachem Reef salt for my initial salting of the aquarium. Magnesium and Alkalinity measure 1300 ppm and 7 dKH consistently. However, Calcium is 500 ppm, according to both Red Sea titration and Hanna photometer tests. I have ordered KZ Reefers Best Salt and plan on doing three 20% water changes over 10 days to lower the Calcium into ideal range (unless someone here thinks that's a bad idea or not worthwhile...please let me know).

On day 13 I added a few small test corals. They were from a system with very low nutrients and were light in color. Since adding, they have shown good PE and appear to be happy in their new home.

I have a batch of new corals arriving tomorrow and can't wait to add them to the system. Should I be concerned with the elevated Ca+ levels? The new salt will be here Thursday and I will start lowering the level then.

Now the $1M question...when should I consider adding additional KZ additives? And what should I start with? It seems a bit early to consider, but since Phosphate and Nitrate are 0...

Net Volume is ~140 gallons. Currently I am dosing 0.6ml ZeoStart 2 times daily, 6 drops Sponge Power daily and 6 drops ZeoBak 3x per week (was doing this daily and started 3x per week this week). I have 500ml carbon passive in the sump and 1.4 liters of zeolite in reactor with 140 gpm flow (measured).

Below are a couple shots of the tank with rockscape taken a couple days ago. Also included are shots of the mechanical room with frag tank that is part of the system.

Cheers!

Would recommend you to stay with the basics, this will be fine for the next couple of weeks.

Default 12.22.13 Tank photos

Hello,

I've posted some current pics of my corals. The system has been running for 3 weeks and the corals have been in the system for almost a week. All seem to be doing very well. Colors have lightened noticeably and moderate polyp extension on most during the day. I have no algae issues (knock on wood) and couldn't be more pleased with the system so far.

Current WQ data:
Nitrate - 0
PO4 - 0
Alk - 7.5
Calcium - 475 (lowering slowly)
Mg - 1300
K - 380 (Red Sea kit - really hard to see color change)
Salinity - 1.025
Temp - 77.5 deg F

Current Dosing:
Every Day - .6 ml ZeoStart 2x's daily
Every Day - 6 drops Sponge Power
Mon, Wed, Fri - 6 drops ZeoBak
Mon and Fri - 3 drops ZeoFood7 (just started last Friday)

Default Update

Hello all. My zeo system continues to mature. I added a large batch of frags this past Monday from ORA that came in pretty dark. They have taken well to their new home and I can already see tissues begin to lighten. I've attached a few photos below, mostly of the of the larger colonies that have been in the tank 3 weeks now, but a couple of the new frags. Some of the larger colonies and original frags in the frag tray have become very light, to pale.

Nitrate and phosphate consistently measure 0.0. I did the first Zeovit media exchange on Thursday at one month in.

Other parameters:
Alk - 6.7 - 7.0
Calcium - 460 (down from 500+)
Potassium - 380
Magnesium - 1300
Salinity - 1.025
pH - 8.2
Temp - 78 deg F

My current dosing schedule is as follows (for a net 140 US gallon system):
ZeoStart - .6ml 2x's daily
ZeoBak - 6 drops Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Sponge Power - 6 drops daily
ZeoFood - 3 drops Monday and Friday
Coral Vitalizer - 3 drops 2x's daily (just started this on Thursday)
K Balance - when K drops below 380

Does anyone see issues with the current dosing plan? Other additives I have on hand but haven't started using include:
AAHC
Coral Snow
Pohls Xtra
Flatworm Stop

I appreciate any input on improvements I could make to my dosing schedule and what I should look for before considering adding additional elements.

Cheers!
Mark

Hi Mark, do you use K-Balance Strong or the Standard version ?

Basically the system is still very young so the biological processes do still improve which does take a couple of month from my experience. A stabile biology is very important especially for coloration so in this stage you will not be able to get out 100 % of coloration, otherwise things are looking very good.

Thanks for the reply G. Alexander. I am just using the standard version. I've only used it a couple of times after measuring Potassium dipping to 370 ppm. The next day it was back to 380. I'm testing with a Salifert kit now too.

Do you think my current dosing regime is OK for this stage? Too much or too little of anything?

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark, the dosing regimen should be fine.

You can try to dose 6 ml Flatworm Stop mixed with 6 ml K-Balance daily for one week. Please report back if you notice any changes.

Thanks G. Alexander. I will start the K-Balance/Flatworm Stop dosing today. I'm curious how this will affect my K level. It measured 390 this morning before dosing.

Here is my current dosing schedule incorporating your suggestions.

Thanks,
Mark

No worry Mark you can use it even if the K+ level is ~ 390 mg already.
