Default 40B Reef Journal

What up.

This is my first reef tank which I set up Sept 2017. After trying a variety of techniques, I officially began ZEOvit on 9/26/18. I would like to use this thread to document my journey.

Here's my tank info:

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) 50 gal/ 190 L
2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) 40 gal/ 150 L
3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique ESV B Ionic Two Part
4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.) - No
5. Are you using Ozone - No
6. Are you using UV - No
7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume) Octo Classic 110-INT (90 gal)
8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels PO4: <.01 ppm; NO3: 10 ppm
9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels Ca: 435 ppm; Alk: 9.1 dKH; Mg: 1500+ ppm (elevated to manage hair algae)
10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.) Filter Sock and Skimmer
11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.) 180 W Black Box LEDs
12. What corals do you keep Mixed Reef
13. Tissue color (light or dark) - Light
14. How long has the tank been running Tank setup 9/17, ZEOvit started 9/26/18
15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system SPS color and growth
16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.) 5 gal WC weekly. ESV B Ionic Mg as needed.
17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.) Began reef w/ dry rock.
18. Any present problems Pale montipora and birds nest. Persistent hair algae
19. Problem description I moved in the middle of May and after the move, my montipora lost most of its green color and growth slowed. Similarly, birds nest frags lost color although they grew. However, their mother colony retained good color and growth. This prompted my switch to zeo. Since then, the montiporas color has improved especially since starting K-Bal on 10/28. Birds nest frags would fuse on my frag rack and the colony was doing better than the frags, so I stacked the frags on top of one another to make three new colonies (fingers crossed). Hair algae also started over the summer, it is resilient but seems to be in regression (fingers crossed).
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.) Alk: Hanna Checker, Ca: Red Sea, Mg: Salifert, K: Salifert
21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)
Daily (Split b/w AM and PM): 0.3 mL zstart; 2 mL K-Balance
*Starting Pohls Xtra Special 2 mL daily tomorrow*
EOD: 2 dr Coral Vitalizer
Biweekly: 2 dr zbak; 2 dr zfood

22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.) K: 370 ppm Sal: 1.026 sg
23. Which salt brand do you use - Instant Ocean Reef Crystals

Here are some shots of the tank. The light is generally far more blue, but I had to turn the blues down to get decent pics.

Hi CvltCorals

The corals you have mention are sensitive to a lower K+ level so dosing K-Balance is for sure the right direction. Level should be ~ 380 mg.

Does the green algae just grow on the frag racks ?

I would say 75% of it is on the rack with a couple of patches on the rock.

Hopefully the K-Bal and Xtra Special will continue to improve things

I have hear about that the material of the racks do often leach substances which do speed up algae growth so if the algae do not disappear it might be a good idea to replace the racks with some kind of a different material.

It’s hard to say what it is. It’s true that some bad materials do have phosphorus.

Any kind of a chemical substance which leaches in saltwater, not every kind of this material is affected some manufacturers offer material which does not cause any issues.

This is some kind of a problem which you just can try to rule out if the algae does not disappear.
