Yes, it's perfect...

But you need the right lenses, maybe Nikkor micro 105, or Sigma macro, or whatever other macro lenses

The kit lens supplied with it 18-55 will do a job as it has a min focal of about 23cm but agree a macro lens would be better

Did you look at the manual, it's pretty easy to do
http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/...40_noprint.pdf

Another good site
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d40...uide/index.htm

I great camera! I have the D80 and though it takes time to learn to use, my percentage of "keeper" pictures has increased the more I practice

I use the d80 and love it. I have the 18-55 lens and it will do ok. If all you want is time line shots to show growth it's great. If you want macro you need a macro lens. The kit lens is just not a macro and although you can get close it's not macro. I will get some pictures with the kit lens and with my macro tamron 90mm . Night and day between the 2 lenses. The Tamron is also very good for portraits. At $500 new it's also one of the cheapest at this length.

Here is a macro shot from the tamron. My battery is charging so I can get some with the kit lens. I haven't charged the battery in well over a month. It takes so many pictures between charges it's easy to forget.
This is about as close as I can get and focus. To get deeper in the coral I need a longer lens or an extender which I will have very soon.

Of course you can take the same picture and crop it and get in closer. Not the best attempt but it only took me 5 seconds in windows fixer.

I do not know. They are both very good camera's and if you had one I would assume you could learn to use it and get just as good of shots as possible with the other. I did buy the 350 canon first and returned it because I was already used to nikon menu's and ease of use. I have heard canon is better in low light but I can't say it's true.
The nikon dx would probably be more side by side with the 400 canon though since they would both be 10mp cameras . The d40 is a 6.1 but still very good from what I have seen.
