Default New tank Elos 160 XL

Hallo. I've run my reef tank a 34 days ago. Below I give a table of additional zeobak, zeostart, sponge power these days. During this time I made only one water change, did not change zeolite yet, activated carbon was not placed in the aquarium yet too. Now I have fast growing green-brown algae (on photo). What do you recommend to do next?

1. Gross water volume of your complete system (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter

600L

2. Net water volume (incl. sump etc.) - US gallons / UK gallons / liter

535L

3. Are you using a CaCO2 reactor or other technique

Skimmer Elos, Zeolite reactor KZ M, balling Fauna marin

4. Are you using a PO4 reactor (how long, how long ago, etc.)

NO

5. Are you using Ozone

NO

6. Are you using UV

NO

7. What skimmer are you using (type, rated water volume)

Skimmer ps 2000

8. What are your actual PO4 and NO3 levels

0 and 0 salifert test kit

9. What are your actual Ca, Alk and Mg levels

Ca = 430, mg = 1380, dKh = 8

10. What filtration method do you use (refugium, DSB, Miracle Mud, etc.)

Zeovite reactor KZ M

11. Type of light (Watt, color temp, how old, etc.)

2x250 and 4xT5

12. What corals do you keep

I don't have corals yet

13. Tissue color (light or dark)
14. How long has the tank been running

34 days old

15. Why do you want to use the ZEOvit system

The system get the most colorful corals

16. Any supplemental dosing (type, amount, why, etc.)

I'm dosing balling Fauna marin

17. Live rock (how much, how old, etc.)

Approx. 20kg since 1st day

18. Any present problems

Brown-green algae is anywhere (on photo)

19. Problem description (tissue loss tips, tissue loss base, diatom bloom, algae, etc.)
20. What test kit do you use (how old, recently switched, etc.)

Salifert Ca, Mg, dKh, NO3, PO4

21. Present dosing, amounts and intervals (ZEOvit, ZEObak, ZEOfood, ZEOstart, ZEOspur2, etc.)

Start dose:
zeobak 5 drops, zeofood 32 drops, zeostart 54ml, sponge power 16ml.

Dosing after start:
5 drops zeobak 2 times a week
1 ml zeostart everyday
5 drops sponge power every other day

22. Other water parameters and water stability (salinity, temp, etc.)

pH 8,2 temp 26,6 salinity 1,025

Welcome to Zeovit!

Your start dose of Zeobak sounds very small for a 540 liter system, it should have been closer to 27ml of zeobak, not 5 drops.

I would stop with zeofood for now, it's not needed in the beginning and I have personally experienced some algae issues when dosing it in a "young" system.
I would also cut down zeostart to 0.55ml 2x per day, 1.1ml in total.

Other than that, I would wait. I experienced similar algae when starting up my tank, they disappeared when the PO4 and NO3 dropped, speaking of PO4 I would recommend you to buy a photometer for it, like a hanna checker, it's much more reliable than regular salifert tests when it comes to phosphates

I've add 27ml of zeobak first day, sorry, it's a mistake. And i don't dose zeofood after 3 doses on starting first week.

Shoul'd I add coral snow? And maybe other products of KZ? Or only waiting?

Great

No need to dose anything else from KZ just yet, you can dose coral snow if you want, but it's not needed.

I'd recommend you to get some clean-up crew, and maybe an algae-eating fish or similar. That plus some time should get your algae to disappear and the reef ready for some corals

This is a good thread with lots of tips and information: http://www.zeovit.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10354

The first zeolite change should be 50% and should be done after 4 weeks, after that you replace 80-90% every 6-8 weeks

After changing zeolite media, dose zeobak daily, 5 drops, for 10 days.

ZeoBac 5 drops 2-3 times a week
Sponge power 5 drops per day
ZeoStart 0.5 ml x2 daily.

If the basic water parameters are within the recommended range, more corals can now be added to the system. Additional fish can be added but should be very slow. At this stage, fish feeding must be carried out with great care, because at this stage the biology is not very stable, and it is recommended that you add some snail-functional organisms that eat algae.

Start changing water 5% per week.

The ZeoVit material is not measured by weight, it is measured by volume, so for a system size of 500 liters, 1.2 liters of material is used, with a flow rate of about 500 liters per hour through the reactor. Since the material is a natural material, the weight can vary.

Zeolite barrel flow rate is approximately 300 liters to 400 liters per hour to 1 liter boiling
Stone, (cannot be larger than 400 liters per hour to 1 liter of zeolite, recommended zeolite bucket
Install the flow meter at the inlet of the zeolite bucket)

Let's try to change the zeolite for the first time. Replace 90% and keep 10%, and give 5 drops of kz bac every day for 10 days.

0.5 liters of activated carbon was used in the filter bag and placed in a passive flow in the oil sump and replaced every 30 days. Wipe the carbon every day to keep the surface clean. Most users get the perfect result with korallenzucht carbon

Keep New South Wales stable:

KH 6.5 - 7.5
Ca 400 - 420 mg
Mg 1250 - 1300 mg
K + ~380 mg

Observe changes in coral response, algae growth, and pay attention to no3 po4. The main core of this phase is the application of star3 and zeolite and the spong power of biology.

It's not a must, but as long as you don't see a brown film on the sand bed, dosing every day might be beneficial for now

Blackizzz's explanation is great, for the beginning of the newly established tank to increase the growth of the sponge growth filter system. Especially in systems with live rock, it is more helpful. Supports growth and water cleaning character of sponges, clams and sea squirt, so water quality is improved significantly. Enhances purple color of SPS.

Starting on day 14:

ZeoBac 1 drop / 100 liters / 25 US gallons 2-3 times a week
Sponge powder 1 drop / 100 liters / 25 US gallons
ZeoStart 0.1 ml / 100 liters / 25 US gallons 2 x daily

The dose needs to be adjusted according to the general appearance of the tank, parameters or corals.

Common and long-term usage with the ZEOvitSystem , 1drop / 100 L every other day

If it was my tank, I would dose Sponge Power daily. It's beneficial for the system and it's inhabitants, if you experience a brown film on the sand, dose every other day instead.

The algae do grow because of nutrients so I would expect there is especially PO4 detectable. Do you have a change to use a high sensitive test kit or a photometer for this parameter ?

Anyways the tank is still cycling and need time. I would recommend you to add herbivore like snails and additional removing the algae manually with a brush. As support you can additional dose 10 ml CoralSnow every other day for some time.

Please also measure the flow through your zeovit reactor by collecting the water from the outlet of the filter for 30 seconds with a separate small container. Multiply the volume by 120 and you will get the output per hour. Run the reactor with continuous flow.

For a net water volume of 530 liters I would recommend to continue dosing as follows:

ZeoBac – 5 drops 3 x weekly
ZeoStart – 0.5 ml 2 x daily
SpongePower – 5 drops every day for the next 4 weeks, than every other day

Run 1.3 liters ZeoVit with a flow of ~ 530 liters per hour through the reactor.

Place 0.4 liters activated carbon in a filter sock and keep it in a passive water flow in your sump, changed every 30 days. Knead the carbon daily to keep the surface clean. Most users get perfect results with korallenzucht carbon.

As the first 4 weeks have already passed replace 50% of the Zeovit material now. Next exchange will be 6 weeks later, than replace 90% of the material. Further exchanges can be lengthen to 6 – 8 weeks depending to the nutrient situation.

G.Alexander

Thanks a lot for you help, i will follow you instructions. And I will keep you informed regarding dynamic of my reef. One question regarding zeolite media reactor. My flow according to zeovit beginners guide is 420 and 1.5 l of media. Shows I decrease to 1.3 and increase the flow?
